Getting Rid of Google Local Language Search Results

About a month ago I wrote about the Google language annoyance.

In the meantime I found time to take another look at this and:

  • http://www.google.com and Firefox search plugin automatically redirect to the stupid Google country page (with their stupid local results). You can hard-code the country URL you want inside your Firefox Google search plugin (~/searchplugins/google.xml) so redirection won’t happen.
  • You can get a replacement search plugin at http://www.StephsBlog.info and customize it some further.
  • You can use Scroogle.org (be careful – if you’re at work, don’t wander off to its dot-com namesake). It’s anonymous, add-free and therefore faster.

Update (Oct 02, 2007):

  • Need to correct myself on one point: Scroogle isn’t necessarily faster since it’s a proxy, but it is about equally fast. I noticed one downtime in the past month and the workaround was easy to implement (use Google.com for a little while).
